Choose in three questions
1. How much are you storing? Pocket money for payments fits on a mobile wallet. Savings you would hate to lose belong on a hardware wallet. For amounts that would change your life, look at multisig: several keys on several devices, so one lost or stolen device is not a disaster.
2. Who should hold the keys? Tick I hold the keys in the finder to hide custodial accounts. Holding your own keys means nobody can freeze your coins, and also that nobody can recover them if you lose your backup.
3. What do you already use? Filter by your phone or computer. If you want to use bitcoin in a browser, read our note on web wallets first.
What the columns mean
- Keys: Yours means the wallet is self-custodial. Custodial means a company holds the keys.
- Bitcoin-only: the wallet supports only bitcoin. Edition means the maker offers a separate Bitcoin-only firmware.
- Source code: Open means anyone can read and audit the code. Partly means some parts are closed or the license restricts reuse.
- Lightning: you can send and receive over the Lightning Network directly in the wallet.
- Multisig: the wallet can be one of several keys that together control the coins.

Frequently asked questions
What is the safest type of bitcoin wallet?
For savings, a hardware wallet from a reputable maker, bought directly from the manufacturer, with the recovery words backed up offline. For large amounts, a multisig setup that spreads keys across several devices and places.
Is a web bitcoin wallet safe?
It is fine for small amounts and for using web apps. A browser is exposed to phishing, malicious extensions and fake copies of the wallet, so savings belong on a hardware wallet. More in web bitcoin wallets.
Do I need a Bitcoin-only wallet?
No, but a Bitcoin-only wallet has less code, fewer features to misconfigure and fewer updates for coins you do not hold. If you only own bitcoin, it is the simpler choice.
What does custodial mean?
A custodial wallet is an account where a company holds the keys for you. It is convenient, but the company can freeze withdrawals, go bankrupt or get hacked. In a self-custodial wallet, you hold the keys yourself.
