On a computer, a wallet app is usually the control panel for a hardware wallet: it shows balances and builds transactions, and the device signs them.

What to look for
- Hardware wallet support, so the keys stay off the computer.
- Coin control, to choose which coins you spend and keep your history private.
- Your own node, if you run one, so the wallet does not ask someone else’s server about your addresses.
A desktop wallet without a hardware wallet keeps keys on a general-purpose computer. That is a hot wallet, like a phone, and fine only for smaller amounts.
