Facts checked on the makers' pages: . Prices are the figures in our affiliate data, last checked on ; the current price is on Trezor's page. Where a maker's page does not state a detail, the table leaves it out instead of writing "No". How we compare

Which one fits whom

Trezor Safe 3 has the lowest price of the three and suits people buying their first hardware wallet. It has a small monochrome screen and two buttons.

Trezor Safe 5 suits people who want a larger screen for checking addresses and prefer a touchscreen to buttons. Trezor’s FAQ says it contains the same secure element chip as the Safe 3, so the main difference it names is the touchscreen with haptic feedback. Trezor also lists a microSD card slot in its specifications.

Trezor Safe 7 suits iPhone users who want to send from a Trezor, and people who value a large, bright screen. It costs almost twice as much as the Safe 5. According to Trezor, its Bluetooth and USB-C connections are encrypted with the open-source Trezor Host Protocol (THP). The built-in battery cannot be replaced, and the device still works over USB-C if the battery fails, according to Trezor.

What all three share

  • Secure element: a certified EAL6+ chip according to Trezor. The Safe 7 has two secure elements.
  • Open source: the firmware is published on GitHub under GPL-3.0.
  • Backups: 12-, 20- and 24-word backups and an advanced multi-share backup.
  • Bitcoin-only edition: each model is also sold in a Bitcoin-only edition.
  • Software: you manage them with the Trezor Suite app or third-party wallet apps.
