Trezor Safe 7 features

Two secure elements. According to Trezor, the Safe 7 combines the TROPIC01 chip, which it calls the world’s first auditable secure element with publicly disclosed test results, with an OPTIGA Trust M chip and a main microcontroller. Its FAQ says no single chip holds everything, so breaking one is not enough, and that the microcontroller coordinates the chips but cannot override their protections. Post-quantum boot protection. Trezor says the Safe 7 is the first hardware wallet to use post-quantum cryptography to secure firmware updates, device authentication and the boot process. Its FAQ says the boardloader checks firmware with the SLH-DSA-128 signature scheme alongside classical EdDSA, so one scheme still protects the device if the other is broken. Bluetooth and USB-C. The maker’s page says both Bluetooth and USB-C connections are secured with the open-source Trezor Host Protocol (THP), which encrypts commands and transactions, and that the wallet is hidden from unknown devices. Bluetooth can be turned off in the device settings, and the wallet works over USB-C alone. Battery and wireless charging. The Safe 7 has a built-in LiFePO4 battery that cannot be replaced. The maker says it offers up to four times more charge cycles than standard lithium batteries and can be fully drained safely, and that the device still works over USB-C if the battery fails. It is Qi2-compatible for wireless charging. Phones and computers. Trezor’s Suite page lists full compatibility on iOS and Android for the Safe 7, while it lists the Safe 3 and Safe 5 as limited on iOS. The Safe 7 FAQ says Bluetooth works on macOS, Windows and Linux for desktop devices and on iOS and Android for mobile devices. Backups and passphrase. The Safe 7 supports 12-, 20- and 24-word backups and an advanced multi-share backup, and the maker’s page lists passphrase protection. According to Trezor’s FAQ, a recovery must be started from Trezor Suite, and afterwards you can verify the backup on the device itself.

Security and custody

The firmware is published on GitHub in the trezor-firmware repository, where the licence is GPL-3.0 and the README names the Safe 7 among the devices its core firmware covers. The maker’s page says the firmware and the Bluetooth and USB protocol (THP) are open source. The same repository asks that suspected vulnerabilities are not reported as public issues and points to its Security tab instead. Your backup and, if you use one, your passphrase are what protect your funds, so keep them separate from the device.
